Fun with color palettes

Check out this very interesting tool from Brides.com. It's called ColorStudio and with a simple click of the mouse, the wheel spins and gives you a fresh new three-piece color palette.

I created this Brown + Lime + Maple combo by specifying the orange family. Give it a try and see what you get!

Happy Friday!

It's a quick post today because the day is jammed with interesting, exciting, equilibrium-changing projects, meetings and phone calls! What more could I ask for on a Friday?!

Check out the very cool plantable thank you cards that Botanical PaperWorks had the privilege of printing for designer Kal Barteski. It's such a pleasure working with a client's excellent design.

Maybe you're looking for some Earth Day coloring pages for weekend fun? I found these ones at Kaboose.com.

An interesting info tidbit - did you know that the term "Earth Day" is in the public domain in the United States, so anyone can print it on a t-shirt, card, write it on their face, send a balloon bouquet or whatever you want with the phrase, BUT....in Canada, Earth Day is owned by a non-profit organization, protected by trademark law and CAN NOT be used except with express permission of the organization? Did you know that? I did not, but I do now because we received a very nice letter from the organization's lawyer letting us know. Good to know, because I assumed (bad move there, I know) that Earth Day was like Mother's Day and Valentine's Day - open to everyone. Yes in the United States, no in Canada. The good news is that the restriction applies only to product intended for Canada, not on items that we print for America.

Finally, next week is Spring Break in our neck of the woods, so if you're looking for something to do with the kids, make some handmade paper with one of these cool kits. It even includes a how-to video.

The Gift of Flowers

Beautiful_day

A life full of flowers - isn't that a life worth living! My daughters gave me these flowers for Easter and we continue to be blessed by their color and vigor. Even as the snow continues to fall, this touch of Spring reminds us that warmer weather is just around the corner.

With each plantable, seed-embedded card, invitation and favor that we ship from our facility here in Winnipeg, we too are sharing the gift of flowers. It's exciting to imagine the hundreds of thousands of wildflower patches that are thriving in gardens around the world.

Attendees to the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles will soon be receiving this special gift from Botanical PaperWorks. As with all of our paper, the lucky recipients can plant the paper and grow wildflowers, creating their own little gardens to herald the start of Spring.

Have a wonderful day, whatever the weather in your area of the country.

Making eco choices

Handmade_paper

So we're doing our part to improve this planet Earth, reducing water consumption, making local food choices and producing plantable paper from 100% post-consumer waste. Then in yesterday's headlines, I learned that there's a debate brewing in our home town over the issue of recycling glass. Seems the alternatives are either collect and ship to another province (at great cost and use of fuel) or send to the landfill where it is crushed and used to "pave" the roads. Frankly, neither alternative sits well with me, but the debate should be interesting and hopefully it will be constructive, yielding some good change.

Thank You for Friends

One of the things that I love about being in business is the network of friends and colleagues that I've developed. We meet up at different business events, sometimes we get together over coffee and we even run into each other at our kids' schools. It's an ever-expanding circle of support as one friend introduces me to another and so on.

Total_she_heidi That's how I met up with Kristen of Total She, a company specializing in gifts and jewelry available through catalog and home parties.

Much to my delight, Kristen designed a bracelet called the "Heidi", named after me. Here's an image of the bracelet, and as I type this, it is adorning my right wrist I love it - nice and light, adds some sparkle and the black fits in with my main wardrobe color. Another cool thing, Total She's new Spring/Summer catalog offers several of Botanical PaperWorks' plantable stationery products. Thanks for including us, Kristen! You can read her blog here.

Tiber_river_retreat Friends Michelle and Adriana from Tiber River Naturals Naturals donated bottles of the delicious-smelling (and paraben-free) Seafoam Lotion to an event that I helped organized this past weekend. Each participant was lucky enough to receive the item shown at right, a lotion with a Pixie Favor tag from Absorb Creative and the theme verse from the weekend. It was fun to talk about Tiber River to the women at the event, and then to introduce them to Tiber River's wonderful product (I'm a huge fan of Bottoms Up lotion for treating eczema).

On deck this week - many exciting things relating to our upcoming move and a short work week; Canadians get Friday off for the Easter weekend. Have a good one! ~Heidi

Seeds of hope

I want to print this message on our new Plantable Coasters and randomly leave them around the restaurants of Winnipeg. The purpose: to spread hope and peace. Just that. Wouldn't that be cool?

In April we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds and when they look at the bare hills they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. They lack only the conditions of sun, heat, rain, and July. Just because we cannot see them does not mean they do not exist.

Business cards that get you remembered

Businesscard_comp_2 Saturday started off with a bang - a vigorous Treadmill workout, a good read and a tasty Tall Grass Cinnamon Bun. I had been meaning to read Jeffrey Gitomer's Little Red Book of Selling for some time, and finally cracked the bold red cover today during my workout. It was an interesting hour.

My eyes popped when I got to the section called Build Your Brand. There, on page 59, were these words of wisdom - "Get the best business card money can buy...it's your image and it makes an impact every time you give one."

Interesting, since on Thursday, I had the chance to hand out my plantable, seed-embedded business cards to a number of business and government leaders in Grand Forks, ND. Did you know that every time (and I mean EVERY TIME!) that I handed out a business card and said the words "and when you're done entering my information into your PDA, you can plant my card and wildflowers will grow", the recipient did a double take? And every time, they asked me "what??" giving me the chance to talk more about Botanical PaperWorks and the work that we do.

I gave out my card to the Mayor of Grand Forks and the Governor of North Dakota, and both asked me more about Botanical PaperWorks and both remembered me and mentioned me by name during their luncheon speeches.

If that plantable business cards aren't the best thing to happen to branding, I don't what is!

And here's the great news...you too can have plantable business cards, from as little as 100 cards to 10,000 cards! We'll print your contact information and a message that suits your industry, like "Growing your business" or "Grow with us". Then start handing out those cards and watch how your cards get noticed and you get remembered.

Email me as for more information and grow your business!
