Long Weekend

In Canada, we have a long weekend starting today. Monday is Victoria Day and a national holiday so yay for three days off in a row!

I'll be back on Tuesday with new blog postings, so in the meantime, I wish you a wonderful weekend.

It's time for eco graduation favors

Plantable_grad_favors

I can hardly believe that graduation is right around the corner. From my cousin graduating from med school to our cherished babysitter finishing high school, there's lots to celebrate. Here's our Plantable Eco Graduation Favor, a great way to commemorate the special day and symbolically plant the seeds of knowledge.

Botanical PaperWorks' quote for the graduation season is this from Robert Louis Stevenson:

Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap
but by the seeds that you plant.

Give us a call for assistance in planning favors and gifts for your special grad!

It was a happy Mother's Day

Happy Monday to you! I hope that you had a wonderful weekend. We celebrated Mother's Day yesterday with my family. It's always fun to get together, especially since the Reimer Family is very good with celebrating. We know how to have a good time and honor our loved ones. And ending the evening with a round of Guitar Hero didn't hurt!

Mothersday_sandwiches

The food was delicious - my favorite fancy sandwiches from Winnipeg iconic restaurant Rae and Jerry's and coconut cupcakes made with a new favorite recipe from Chatelaine. I brought the left-over cupcakes to work today, but I sheepishly admit that I ate one on the way into the office this morning. Nothing like a cupcake to start the day!!

Time for Spring Showers and Summer Weddings

Love_2_plantme

It's prime time for planning Spring Wedding Showers and Summer Weddings. A fresh plantable favor perfectly fits the theme of blooming love and growing families. This combination favor and place card is one of my favorites because

  1. it saves paper (and trees) by combining the favor with the place card
  2. it's made with tree-free plantable paper
  3. it's available in your choice of ribbon and paper color to make a completely personalized piece.

More plantable wedding favors available here.

Back from Turkey

My parents recently returned from several weeks in Turkey and did us kids ever benefit from their travels! I wanted to share some pics of the beautiful gifts they brought back because the colors and textures are so lovely.

Turkey_bags

My sisters-in-law and I each chose a bag. I got the blue one, Toni chose the red one at bottom left and Anne got the red one at top right.

Turkey_icon

My brother Nathan received this icon. It's quite large - maybe 5x5 inches. My other brother, Ben, got a kilim, a traditional Turkish rug. A really nice one.

Turkey_shoes

My daughters each received a pair of these fancy, shmanshy shoes that they now wear around the house, slipping and sliding. They feel the shoes compliment their pink princess dresses perfectly.

Thanks Mom and Dad!

My 100 year old book

Book_1

My Grandma shared this book with me recently. Published in 1908, this special piece is exactly 100 years old. Called "Women at Home 1908", it is a compilation of stories, recipes and how-to articles for homemakers and ladies of the time. It belonged to my Grandma's mother, my Great-Grandma who I called Nanny growing up. She lived until my early teens so I'm lucky to have many years of memories.

Book_4

We're also really lucky to have this book. As someone who loves books, it's thrilling to hold a 100-year-old volume, still in great shape, readable and solidly sewn. I don't think that today's Grisham novels will be such great shape a century from now!

Book_2

The book contains fashion advice, including this spread called "A Fashionable Yachting Gown".

Book_3

Here are step-by-step instructions on dressmaking.

Book_5

I especially love the real-life profiles of citizens of the time. The violinist shown at left was described as very accomplished and dedicated to her career.

Wedding Trends for 2008

Getting married this year? Or just curious about wedding trends for this year and beyond? Here are some top trends as reported to us by idobride.com and theweddingreport.com.

  • Designers are pushing wedding dresses with alternative styles and necklines, but brides still favor the strapless gown.
  • The biggest trend for bridesmaids' attire is the wear-again dress - I love this idea because it's practical, economical and planet-friendly since the dress will get good wear rather than moldering away in the back of the closet.
  • Couples still prefer traditional white wedding cakes, but custom-designed cakes are becoming popular.
  • Consistently designed invitations, save-the-date cards, programs, escort/place cards, menus, and thank-you cards are becoming trendy - This is exactly why we designed the Absorb Creative photo invitation collection with all of its coordinating components.
  • Cinematic videography is a new and exciting alternative to standard photography and video services.
  • Online photo showcasing, which allows couples, their family and friends to view, share and purchase wedding photographs is a rising trend.
  • 1980's fashion styles are popular, including textured dresses, bright colors, wide belts or sashes, big jewelry, and cover bands.
  • White gold and platinum wedding rings continue to outpace yellow gold.

Plantable hang tags - tags that don't get thrown away

With 2008 declared as International Year of the Planet Earth by UNESCO, Botanical PaperWorks is striving to make changes big and small to make an impact on the environment. Some examples: we went paperless with our order-taking system in order to reduce our paper consumption. Another: we've canceled our water delivery and are setting up a drinking water system in-house, so now we don't have water shipped by truck and we don't use the #7 water bottles with BPA that is now banned in Canada. It's small stuff but if everyone does their part, it's going to make a big difference.

Plantablehangtags Here's a client who's making a difference. They're called Pure Tot and they're making children's garments with organic, fair trade and non-toxic materials. And they've chosen to use tree-free paper embedded with seeds for their hang tags. These plantable hang tags grow wildflowers when planted, so it's a double benefit - the paper is made with 100% post-consumer waste AND the lucky recipient gets a pot of wildflowers!

Pure Tot is part of a bigger network of initiatives and you can read about it in their blog.

I'm excited about more and more companies using plantable hang tags because all those little pieces of packaging add up to a whole lot of garbage. And if we can reduce a portion of it (AND grow flowers instead!) then we'll make a difference to the amount of garbage going into the landfills. And that's a very good thing!
