Plantable hang tags - tags that don't get thrown away
With 2008 declared as International Year of the Planet Earth by UNESCO, Botanical PaperWorks is striving to make changes big and small to make an impact on the environment. Some examples: we went paperless with our order-taking system in order to reduce our paper consumption. Another: we've canceled our water delivery and are setting up a drinking water system in-house, so now we don't have water shipped by truck and we don't use the #7 water bottles with BPA that is now banned in Canada. It's small stuff but if everyone does their part, it's going to make a big difference.
Here's a client who's making a difference. They're called Pure Tot and they're making children's garments with organic, fair trade and non-toxic materials. And they've chosen to use tree-free paper embedded with seeds for their hang tags. These plantable hang tags grow wildflowers when planted, so it's a double benefit - the paper is made with 100% post-consumer waste AND the lucky recipient gets a pot of wildflowers!
Pure Tot is part of a bigger network of initiatives and you can read about it in their blog.
I'm excited about more and more companies using plantable hang tags because all those little pieces of packaging add up to a whole lot of garbage. And if we can reduce a portion of it (AND grow flowers instead!) then we'll make a difference to the amount of garbage going into the landfills. And that's a very good thing!
