World-adventurer Stephanie (aka Operations Manager) sent these photos from her trip to Germany this Christmas. Shown below are ancient tools of the papermaking and bookbinding trade - a Hollander beater and book press.

Phew, what a Christmas! Family gatherings, good food, my cousin's wedding, a bout of the flu - the holidays had it all.

The Botanical PaperWorks holiday card this year had the message of "Seedy Greetings and a Blooming New Year", printed on one of our plantable Holiday Cards of course!
Here's a one-of-a-kind plantable holiday card from the creative and innovative Fusion Communications Group. The belly band is embedded with spruce tree seeds, the same paper used in our Plantable Holiday Gift Tags. We love that Fusion is making a donation on each recipient's behalf to World Vision's Agricultural Packs.

We're having a relaxed Saturday here at the Reimer-Epp home, baking gingerbread cookies and a gingerbread house for my kids. Both girls are at the ballet with their grandparents and it's lovely to have some time to myself. Most years, we bake the gingerbread in November, freeze it and assemble in December. But this year has been full with other projects, so the gingerbread had to wait until now. Yes, it's December 21. I am cutting it a LITTLE close.
Yesterday was an important press day for Botanical PaperWorks. I rose at 5 am to do the Warren Pierce radio show at 5:40 am (6:40 EST). It would have been funny to be a fly on the wall as I paced the basement singing Jingle Bells to to clear my voice.
In the evening, we were featured in a segment on CTV National News with Sandie Rinaldo. You may recall my writing about the local CTV News segment on Tuesday. The piece was edited and run nationally, which is a thrill for us.
Off now to do some grocery shopping including picking up the ingredients for our annual Baked Brie. John and I have been making this for Christmas morning brunch with my family since 1997. Have a relaxed day.
There's no doubt about it, this is a lovely time of the year. Even if the temperature seems permanently stuck at -30C/-22F with the windchill (click for a most thorough and interesting explanation of windchill). Tonight, Lavonne and I are going to warm up at Don Pedro's Mexican Grill with some warm fish tacos and cool mojitos. Then, we'll head over the Concert Hall for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Christmas presentation of Peter Pan. Should be a great evening!

Over the weekend, we launched a new collection of plantable wedding invitations printed on our signature Garden Greetings™ plantable, 100% post-consumer waste paper. The collection was designed by artist Kal Barteski and also includes several designs from graphic designer Holly Clarke of Small Potatoes fame here in Winnipeg. It was our first time working with Holly, and a great experience at that. And friends following Botanical PaperWorks over the years are familiar with Kal's designs, from her first collection with us in 2007 to this new one for 2009. I made an exciting discovery on the weekend. In an effort to reduce, John and I reorganized our basement on Sunday, taking out toys that our kids have outgrown, and giving them away to people who need them. While going through old boxes, I found a beloved toy from my childhood - Dataman. Here he is:
Dataman is a math video game from the late 1970's. When I got this toy for Christmas, I was the coolest kid in the class. No one had ever seen a video game in 1977. It was awesome.
And guess what's the best part? Dataman still works! I plugged in a 9V battery and with the click of the ON button, I was transported back to my childhood. We've decided to give our six-year-old daughter Dataman for Christmas. Shhh....don't tell her!
